This volume includes the Misa de batalla Escoutez a 12 for two choirs by Carlos Patiño (1600-1675), master of the Royal Chapel in the reigns of Philip IV and Charles II. The work is a "parody mass" or "imitation mass" that uses the materials of the well-known chanson "La guerre" by Clément Janequin (ca. 1485-1558). This chanson was made to commemorate the victory of Francis I of France (1494-1547) at the battle of Marignano (1515). It begins with the word "Escoutez", hence the Mass is given the title "Escoutez Battle Mass". Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599) also composed a Misa de batalla Escoutez, published in the Missarum liber secundus (Rome, 1582), which very possibly served as a model for Patiño. A peculiarity of the work we publish is that the 12 voices are distributed in two choirs of six voices each and not in three choirs of four voices each, an arrangement that was more common at the time.

Parts: Kyrie - Gloria - Credo - Sanctus - Agnus Dei

Voices: SSSATB-SSATTB, bc.
