The Association

ARS HISPANA is a non-profit cultural association created in 2007. Its purpose is to recover the Spanish musical heritage with conferences, editions, recordings and concerts. To this end, we collaborate with various institutions and music groups, thus bringing to light the rich Spanish and Hispano-American musical heritage from the 16th to the 19th century.
Ars Hispana

Our history

ARS HISPANA was founded in 2007, when musicologists Raúl Angulo and Antoni Pons came together to create an institution dedicated to researching, editing and bringing to light unpublished works by Spanish composers from the 16th to the 19th century.

Its first work focused on retrieving a selection of works by composer Juan Francés de Iribarren (1699-1767), which were performed at various music festivals between 2007 and 2008 by the ensemble Opera Omnia. This same ensemble published in 2007 a CD with a selection of works by Diego Perez de Camino (1738-1796). In 2009, the first musical editions were published: the José Español's Opera omnia (ca.1690-1758), three volumes of selected works by Diego Pérez de Camino (1738-1796) and the entirely sung zarzuela Coronis by Sebastián Durón (1660-1716).

In 2010, the editions prepared by the researchers of ARS HISPANA began to be published in the editorial of the Fundacion Gustavo Bueno of Oviedo. More than 60 volumes of music have been published through this institution. Since 2017, ARS HISPANA has its own publishing house.

Since its founding, ARS HISPANA has collaborated with various Spanish groups and orchestras, bringing the early Spanish music to the interested public. Its main research lines are the musicians who worked for the Royal Chapel of Madrid (Carlos Patiño, Sebastián Durón, José de Torres, Antonio Literes, José de Nebra, José Teixidor, etc.) and baroque theatre music. It also pays particular attention to the preserved oratorios of the eighteenth century.

ARS HISPANA has received the Best Research Award of the Association of Spanish Groups of Early Music in 2015 and 2016.
