Carnicer | Sinfonia per Il barbiere di Siviglia (1818)

The symphony that we publish in the present volume dates from 1818, composed for the Spanish premiere of Gioachino Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro de la Santa Cruz in Barcelona. Carnicer, then director of that theater, decided to compose a new overture for the opera, since the one by Rossini was used for the operas Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra, premiered at the same theater a short time before, and Aureliano in Palmira, both by Rossini.

The present edition takes as its main source the autograph of Carnicer himself, although the many copies and arrangements of this symphony that have come down to us have also been considered.

Orchestra: 2 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 French horns, 2 trumpets, trombone, 2 violins, viola, cello and bass.
