Patiño's work is a "parody mass" or "imitation mass" that uses the materials of the motet Benedicam Dominum in omni tempore by Géry de Ghersem (ca. 1573/5 - 1630), who was singer in the Royal Chapel at the end of of the reign of Felipe II and, later, lieutenant master of the Royal Chapel at the beginning of the reign of Felipe III.
