On July 9, 1845, the first five numbers of the opera Padilla or the Siege of Medina were performed at the Teatro del Circo in Madrid, with a libretto by Gregorio Romero Larrañaga (1814–1872) and music by Joaquín Espín y Guillén (1812–1882). They achieved notable success, despite which the work was never performed in its entirety. The sources of this composition were considered lost for decades, until 2017, when incomplete materials were found within the Miguel Salvador Carreras Legacy, donated by his descendants to the Instituto de Estudios Riojanos (IER).
