Durón | Hasta lo insensible adora

In the present volume, we continue our edition of Sebastián Durón’s stage music with the publication of the partially sung zarzuela Hasta lo insensible adora. The libretto is by José de Cañizares, with whom Durón had previously collaborated on Las nuevas armas de Amor (c. 1702–1703). Until recently, the scholarly literature dated the premiere to 16 May 1713 at the Corral de la Cruz and attributed the music to Antonio Literes. However, documentary evidence brought to light by Begoña Lolo in 2009 has established that the work was first performed at the palace on 17 September 1704 to mark the birthday of Queen Maria Luisa Gabriela of Savoy. The 1713 production was its first in Madrid’s public theatres, where it was revived on several occasions until 1734. As for the authorship of the music, although the principal source attributes it to Literes, other sources identify Durón as the composer. This latter attribution is further supported by a comparative analysis of the music of this zarzuela and that of other zarzuelas by Literes and Durón. Of all Durón’s zarzuelas, Hasta lo insensible adora enjoyed the longest life on stage.
