We publish in this volume the secular cantatas compiled in the Pombalino manuscript (National Library of Portugal, Pba-82). This manuscript, copied by the poet and playwright Alexandre António de Lima (1699-1760) around 1715-1725, contains sixteen secular cantatas with Spanish text. The authors of these cantatas are some of the most famous Spanish and Portuguese composers of their time: Sebastián Durón, Jaime de la Te y Sagau, André da Costa, Francisco José Coutinho, Antonio Literes and Pedro Rabassa. Unfortunately, the copy presents numerous and serious errors, both in the music and in the text. Thanks to the comparison with other sources, it has been possible to correct errors and thus offer a useful tool to performers who wish to explore the repertoire of the human cantata.

Cantatas (all for S and bc):

André da Costa (fl. 1701-1722): Alba soberana
