Patiño | Litanies of the Blessed Sacrament, Mass of the Litany

In the present volume we publish the Misa a 8 de la letanía by Carlos Patiño (1600–1675), master of the Royal Chapel during the reigns of Philip IV and Charles II. We have discovered that it is a parody mass (or imitation mass) built from the material of the composer’s own Letanía a 8 del Santísimo Sacramento, a work that was regularly sung during the monthly Forty Hours devotion in the Royal Chapel. The latter was one of the few compositions by Patiño that remained in the Royal Chapel’s repertoire. Francisco Corselli (1705–1778) even produced an orchestration of the litany in 1746 in order to adapt it to eighteenth-century taste, a version that we also include in this volume.
