Description

We publish in this volume the Mass "Ave maris stella" for 4 voices with violins by Francisco Valls, chapel master of the Cathedral of Barcelona from 1696 to 1726. This mass is based on the plain chant of the hymn Ave maris stella.

Two sources are preserved of this mass: an incomplete set of parts and a score. The parts are preserved in the Library of Catalonia (Barcelona), from the Cathedral of Barcelona, and the score is a manuscript kept in the library of the Centre Borja of Sant Cugat del Vallès.
