We publish in this volume the Misa a 9 con violines «Haec est virgo sapiens» by Francisco Valls (ca. 1671-1747), chapel master of the Barcelona Cathedral between 1696 and 1726. Valls is the author of the treatise Mapa Armónico-Práctico. In his work, while proving to know the complexities of the counterpoint, Valls is open to new aesthetics from France and Italy.
The musical manuscript of this mass is kept in the Biblioteca de Cataluña, from the Barcelona cathedral collection. The mass is based on the plain song Haec est virgo sapiens, an antiphon of lauds from the Common of Virgins.
Voices and instruments: SSATT-SATB choir; 2 violins, bc.
